A Tale For All

Experience a narrative so compelling, it feels like fiction. Let Henri's story captivate you, and become a part of your next favorite read.

Why this book?

Imagine a heart shattered, not into dust, but into a map. A map leading to uncharted territories, where heartbreak becomes the compass for an epic adventure.

That's Henri's story. Forget polished platitudes. This is raw, unfiltered humanity, served up with a side of breathtaking landscapes and gut-punch honesty.

Think of it as a road trip with your soul.

You'll laugh, you'll maybe cry a bit, and you'll definitely find yourself rooting for Henri as he stumbles, learns, and ultimately, soars. It's not just a book; it's a front-row seat to resilience, a masterclass in turning pain into purpose.

And hey, it reads like a thriller – minus the predictable plot twists.
This is real, this is adventure, this is your next unforgettable read.

"The Broken Traveler" hit home for me. It’s not just about travel—it’s about picking up the pieces after heartbreak. Hugo Smienk's storytelling? It felt like a chat with a close friend. Henri's journey mirrored my own. It’s a powerful read, stirring emotions and igniting wanderlust. If you're after a book that resonates deeply and fuels your sense of adventure, this is it.

I met Hugo in a bar in Benaulim, Goa, on a recent visit to India. He was great company, a fine raconteur and an even better backgammon player . I bought a copy of The Broken Traveler that very night.

It was waiting for me back in London when I got home. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
I could hear his voice clearly as I read it. The style reminds me a little of Paul Theroux.
It’s an internal travelogue as much as it’s about the places he visits and people he meets.

It’s ‘warts and all’ honest - to the point occasionally when I felt almost voyeuristic reading it. If travelling in order to find renewal in the unfamiliar is your thing, I think you’ll enjoy this book very much.

One of my favourite book!
It was a marvellous read about "the art of infinite love"!!

Henri takes you on an exciting spiritual journey to some of the most beautiful, interesting and vibrant places in the world, struggling to heal his soul after a painful and complicated divorce.

It's a well-written memoir about love, adoration, betrayal, disappointment, healing, self discovery, mental reset, adventure confronting the reader to think about these issues from the more imediat point of view of the character in the book.

The writing style is captivating with vivid details that creates a true sensory experience that makes you get lost in the story.

Smienk's ability to depict Henri's journey through close personal narration and detailed emotional and psychological depth was gripping, making me feel as though I was walking beside Henri in his far-flung locations, but also getting to know Hugo at the same time.

The vivid, sensory details brought each location to life, enhancing the emotional depth of Henri's struggles with brilliant atmospheric vocabulary.

Great book. Fantastic reading

Great memoirs of a broken man

Ronnald

This memoir is a rollercoaster of emotions that takes you on a journey including heartbreak, healing, and adventure.
The storytelling through Smienk's words paint a vivid picture that kept me hooked wanting to go through just another page.

It’s a patchwork quilt of memories and experiences, adding an element of surprise and making each chapter a delightful.

Henri, the protagonist, is not just a character; he's a companion, flawed and genuine. I found myself relating to his struggles, cheering for his triumphs, and even shaking my head at some of his choices – a testament to the author's ability to create characters that feel like friends.

Smienk's writing style is a breath of fresh air. It's not swayed by literary trends; it's timeless and deeply human. There were moments when I laughed out loud at the witty humor sprinkled throughout, and there were moments when I felt angry or sadness.
This memoir is a masterclass in balancing light and shade.

The main character sets off on a journey because it is the only way to soothe the pain, heal and understand.

Some may call it an escape, but for me it is a symbolic journey that gives hope for the future and answers the question: Who am I?

Henri shows us the world through his eyes - beautiful and rich, full of colors and flavors.

After reading the book, I felt very moved. On the one hand, it was super addictive and you couldn't stop reading, but on the other hand, I felt an inner stirring that wouldn't let me stop thinking about it.

The story of the main character is so true that I felt as if I was participating in his journey internally and around the world.
It shows how a man feels during and after a divorce and I assure you that these are completely different emotions and point of view from a woman’s.

That's why the main character sometimes entertained me, sometimes angered me, sometimes made me feel sad.

This book is must read for everyone - women and men to understand, see and touch upon emotions - both beautiful and difficult.

I bought a book. That’s all I thought I bought.
But without my permission I was taken on a journey. You can not help but go with him.

Through his charm and ease- he will make you want to cheer for him. Through the trials and trails he faces - he will hurt You. Yet- you want to take your time and read this at your pace. Savour the moments as You travel through time and place.

Oh Henri..! Where have you taken me off to now..?
It’s been a long time that I’ve read a good book that I could connect with the turn of each page. Surreal.
Definitely recommend.

Absolutely loved it!
Smienk’s writing feels like sinking into a familiar armchair- so comfortable for me. The story delivers just as other review mention.

But here’s the kicker: I am actually excited to read it again, a first for me!
And the cherry on top? It’s now confirmed: men just don’t get us woman. Still, a fantastic book. 5 stars without a doubt!

FAQ

Got questions?

So, it's a memoir, but everyone says it reads like a novel. Is that just marketing hype?

Honestly? I wrote it like a novel. I wanted you to feel Henri's journey, not just read about it. Readers tell me they get lost in the story, like they're living it. If that's hype, then yeah, we're guilty.

You mention 'universal pain.' Isn't that a bit dramatic?

Is it? We've all felt lost, betrayed, or heartbroken. Henri's journey just puts those feelings on a map. Maybe it's dramatic, but it's also real.

I'm not a big 'self-help' person. Is this book just disguised self-help?

If by 'self-help' you mean 'finding strength in unexpected places,' then maybe. But honestly, it's a story. Henri's journey is his own, but maybe you'll find a few signposts for your own path along the way.

I saw the Scott Masters logo. What's the deal with that?

That's Daxsi Indie Books, my publisher. They're a bit quirky, like me. And Scott Masters is their fun mascot. Consider it a mark of our indie spirit.

Heartbreak and adventure? That sounds like a weird mix. Does it actually work?

Life's a weird mix, right? Heartbreak doesn't just make you sad; it makes you question everything. And sometimes, questioning everything leads to the most unexpected adventures. Henri's story is proof.

Why Henri? Is that your real name ?

Henri's a piece of me, a piece of us all. It's a name that felt right for the story. And no, it's not my real name.

But who's to say it's not real? You know my real name is; Hugo Smienk, right?

Why the focus on red wine? Is that a metaphor?

Red wine is just... life. Complex, unpredictable, and sometimes, the best way to end a long day. And yes, maybe there's a metaphor in there somewhere. But mostly, it's just good wine.

So, what's the one thing you want readers to take away from this book?

That even when you feel broken, you're not done. You're just getting started on a new adventure. And maybe, just maybe, you'll find some good wine along the way.
